How to Join the OTW

With all my blogging about Swancon, I haven't yet mentioned the other exciting fannish thing that's happened to me this week.

I am now a proud member of the Organization for Transformative Works! So much yay!

Membership officially opened this week, which means that if you donate a minimum of US$10, you can vote in the first election of the Board of Directors, which will happen later this year. Plus, as an extra special bonus, you get the warm glowing feeling of knowing you've supported a fan project that's working hard to give us all nice things.

Free things! Like an Archive of Our Own that any fan can use; or the archive software, which anyone can take and set up for themselves. And the academic journal, Transformative Works and Cultures, which is so shiny I can barely stand it. And the wiki, and Open Doors, and all the other wonderful projects.

And all of it will be free for fans to use, free of advertising, run by fans for fans.

The OTW are also doing other neat stuff, like training volunteer programmers who are now working hard on the Archive software.

That's why the OTW needs your donations, whether you decide to join as a Voting Member or not. Your generosity will help fund all these things: the servers, the infrastructure, and an ad-free space for fanworks. If you don't have much money, there are other ways you can contribute, like sending a "Willing to Serve" email to the Volunteers committee <volunteers@transformativeworks.org>, letting them know what kinds of skills you have to offer.

Becoming a Member is easy. Just go to the Membership form to join up. You should read the FAQ on Membership and the Privacy Policy first.

You can also pay by cheque:
Organization for Transformative Works, Inc.
P.O. Box 13501
Silver Spring, MD 20910
USA

Membership is annual, but you are welcome to donate above and beyond that US$10 as often as you like. :) People from any country are welcome to join.

The OTW is incorporated as a nonprofit in the USA and have applied for 501©(3) status; if the organization gets it this year, membership and other donations will be tax-deductible for US residents.

There's more information available in English, Čeština, Deutsch, Español, Français and Italiano on otw_news's announcement post.

I'm so thrilled to be part of this project. It's already awesome, and it's just going to get awesomer.

*wears invisible OTW hat like only a happy LOLcat can :)*
