in the eye of the beholder

I'm not really 'in' Supernatural fandom, in that I'm just reading a small subset of the fic, and not really reading or thinking about meta. But even so, I keep stumbling across bitter author's notes, so I can't help but be aware of a general fannish feeling, which goes something like: "OMG! My fannish love is dead. Everyone died in Season 5! Woe!"

And I get that. I really, really do. I liked some of those characters who died very much too; and the gender ratio of the deaths is truly fucked up. If I'd gone straight from SGA fandom to reading SPN, I might even feel the same way about it.

But I didn't. I'm a Children of Earth survivor. It's amazing how much that has changed my perspective. Despite my sympathy for those mourning SPN fans, a still-bitter part of me can't help but darkly LOL at those wails of woe.

I mean, despite the secondary-character death-toll, every main character in Supernatural is still alive, only one of them is damned, and resurrection is canonical and common.

It's an embarrassment of riches, is what it is.

I never used to think that way about TV shows. I honestly I don't think I'll ever watch TV the same way again, post-CoE. And I can't decide if that's a good thing or a terrible one.
