I was asked to do this as a pinch hit, and I'm so glad I was. The prompt was for a Destiel vid to a really angsty song, but with a happy ending preferred. Challenge accepted. :)
Once I decided on what is probably the angstiest song of the last decade, it was actually a lot of fun to let myself go to eleven on matching it to the visuals. The only problem being there was so much to choose from! I'm pleased with how the vid turned out, though. It gave me a lot of feels as I was vidding it, and I hope it does for you as you watch.Title: Hurt, by cupidsbowVisual source: Supernatural

I wrote this story to fill a prompt of "heaven re-population time" for the Dean/Castiel Secret Santa fest. I decided adding a note about why I wrote it the way I did wasn't appropriate during the fest, but now that authors have been revealed there are several things I want to say.
I'm going to drop some spoilers for the story in what follows, so if you don't want to be spoiled, go read the story and then come back.
First and foremost, this story is not crack, and that's why I didn't tag for crack. Yes, the premise is cracktacular (and it's literally about taking drugs at one point too, I am aware of the irony), but it's only as cracktacular as the premise of the show itself
. For me, that's one of the defining features of crack -- that it's something beyond where the canon premise could ever go. Which is not to say I think we'll ever get angelic pregnancy in the show or anything like that, just that my story extrapolates from the canon rules of the show when it comes to how vessels work. It is pretty much canon compliant as of s10.
I know, that boggles me too, but there you are.
Here's the thing. I have long been bothered by the canonical implications of angelic vessels. I know much of the fandom shares this, which is why in the early days of slashing Dean and Castiel, fandom quickly developed fanon that had Jimmy's soul dead and in Heaven due to one of Castiel's many smitings, and Castiel alone in the vessel. This has since become canon, largely because it's the only somewhat ethical solution to the Vessel Problem, with regards to Castiel anyway. As Hannah raised in s10, it remains an issue for other angels.
And that brings me to the "heaven re-population time" prompt that I filled for Nonexistenz. As soon as I read that prompt I knew it was the one I was going to try to fill, because it was something I'd been thinking about for a long time. I've read quite a few mpreg fics in Supernatural fandom, and generally speaking, the ethics of vessels and the reproductive biology of angels are hand-waved away, and the angel baby is conveniently born in a human body. I have no problem with that -- where would we be as writers without the grand tradition of hand-wavium? I've used it myself many times. But this particular example fascinates me, because in a fandom as enormous and long-lasting as Supernatural, fanon hasn't really come up with a satisfying solution to the Vessel Problem when it comes to mpreg offspring. The angel baby is usually just magically born with a human vessel. As long as you don't think about it too hard the born-with-a-body thing works, but once you do think about it, it raises the question of why the angels don't just make themselves a vessel that way too and so avoid the whole issue with needing a "Yes" and trapping some poor human as a ride-along. Anna even managed this canonically, so it's not a leap to think angels could do it on purpose... as long as they were willing to risk their grace.
Grace is really the issue. It's why angels need a vessel in the first place, but it's also why they need a "Yes", and why they don't just plant themselves inside women's wombs to grow their own vessel.
Anyway, when I got the "heaven re-population time" prompt, I wanted to see if I could come up with a solution to the Vessel Problem that wasn't either based on hand-wavium or as creepy as fuck. (Because believe me, I thought about the Steins and their Frankenstein lab a lot
while writing this fic, and nearly added a whole B Plot that would have had the angel children ending up in human vessels, but man, that was creepy no matter how I wrote it.) I thought about how I could solve the Vessel Problem for a long, long time. I posed the question as a hypothetical to various people (not naming the show, but giving the ethical conundrum), including my mother, and none of them could really come up with a solution either, other than not using a human as a vessel. In the end, I decided the only viable solution was to choose a non-human host that could contain grace, and with that decision the burning bush of the Bible leapt to mind along with Anna's tree. A bit of research later and I had my Tree of Life and Death grace container. (Believe me, my Google history is pretty damn weird right now -- cannabis cultivation, giving birth, Bible verses about the Tree, how to watch solar eclipses safely, and a bunch of other stuff that didn't make it into the finished story).
The hardest part from there was trying to write a story that was light-hearted and funny, as suitable for a fest, while still staying canon-compliant, and trying to write the cractacular premise without tipping over into full-on silliness. I'm really not sure I succeeded with that, but this story is my very best shot at writing about angelic reproduction while also tackling the Vessel Problem.Title: the fruit of a righteous man by cupidsbow

This year, I found Festivids to be surprisingly happymaking. I mean, it always is, because these are small fandoms dear to people's hearts. But last year, there was definitely an angsty vibe to a lot of vids, and this year, it's just so happy! Anyway, on with the recs.

(Persuasion) by dkwilliams
I love Persuasion. It's one of my favourite books, and this particular adaptation is lovely. A lot of what I love about it is in the language though, so I really wasn't sure how well it would translate into a vid. All credit to the vidder, because this is charming. It's full of Anne's yearning, and the song choice pays off in the most fabulous way in the climax. So good.Highly recced:Blank Space

Sometimes a slash vid happens that makes you wonder why it had never happened before. This is that vid. Surprisingly funny and delightful.

This is gorgeous! It's an affecting and dreamy journey through space, via a handful of recent movies, and combined with the soundtrack it works better than any words I could use to describe it.Flashbulb Eyes

Hi fellow festividder!
I’m so glad you signed up, and I hope you find something in my prompts to have fun with. I love all sorts of vids, so the number one thing I want to say to you is: please make something that you’re passionate about, because that’s pretty much guaranteed to mean I’ll love it too.
My favourite kinds of vids include: fast-paced vids, experimental or weird vids, constructed reality or AU vids, and ironic vids. I'm particularly fond of constructed reality and AU vids, so if you want to include some additional outside source material, that works for me. Basically, if you have an off-the-wall idea, I'm the one to vid it for. :)
I’m not great at suggesting music, but have fairly broad tastes. I like everything from music without lyrics, mash-ups and remixes, all different eras, and fast-paced music.
A pet peeve: I don't like sound-bites from the source text over the top of lyrics -- I can't understand either when that's done. But sampling is fine when it's not over lyrics, so if that's your thing have some fun with it.
I think that's everything. Thanks again, and I can’t wait to see what you make.( PromptsCollapse )

This was the final vid I made for Festivids this year, and it was a last minute treat I barely got done in time.
I had around 24 hours from start to finish, and that included getting the source and doing some major editing on the music (which was way too long to work). In the end, I had about 6 hours of actual visual editing time. Given that, I think it turned out pretty well, although I have made a few minor tweaks in the final version.
What really stood out for me when making this video is how few cuts there are in the film itself. Because so much of it is effects work, a lot of the enormous action scenes are all in one "take" due to them being composited together digitally. It made editing a real luxury, because the problem of clips not being long enough just wasn't an issue. In fact, I sped up most of the clips a little and still didn't have to worry about running out of footage. Nice.

I made this as a pinch hit, and enjoyed it very much. Moonrise Kingdom is such a gorgeous, stylised film, and it was interesting to unpick it and look at how it had been put together. Choosing a song from the 60s, when the movie is set, seemed suitably nostalgic. I really love how this vid turned out, for all that it was quite a simple edit.

This vid was my main assignment this year. I had a lot of fun watching the other vids in the request list, notably Why Don't You Play in Hell? I was very tempted to vid that, as it's a surreal, funny, clever movie about poseur film makers and rival gangs. It was really violent, though, and in the end I didn't want to spend hours editing quite so much blood. I was actually matched to Cara Marie on Hard Boiled, which has a great action sequence with new born babies in a hospital, and I was very tempted to vid that!
In the end, 14 Blades was my favourite of the films -- it's just so gorgeous. There are so many great sequences that didn't even make it into the vid -- the main plot line, which I didn't use at all, the many horse chases through the desert, and several other spectacular fights just to name a few. I could make a whole other vid, equally pretty, without re-using a single clip from the vid I actually made. So if you're looking for gorgeous source to vid, I recommend 14 Blades.
As for the vid itself, I like how it turned out, even though it's not the vid I originally envisaged. When I started to edit, I was in the mood for editing action, so that's what I went with instead of a character piece about the A Plot. I can see quite a few flaws with the finished vid (as always, is there ever a perfect vid?), but overall, I like the way the visuals and music work together, especially as there's no lyric to use as a narrative spine.

You can find this year's Festivids masterlist post: here
. The whole thing is worth a look.
I scored two vids this year, and I'm super lucky because they are also my favourite vids this year. :)
Armour of God, “Dance!” (PG-13)
This is such a great vid. Excellent song choice, fantastic use of movement, and funny! Everything I wanted of a Jackie Chan vid. Highly recced.
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, “No Problem So Great,” (G)
And this is all about the therapeutic value of a good cup of tea. I love it. The sense of community and women's business at the heart of this show shines through every cup. :) Also highly recced.
Other vids I recommend highly, in alphabetical fandom order:
Antique, “Sugar Shack,” (PG-13)
Fast paced, hilarious, and guaranteed to make you hungry.
The Emperor's New Groove, “Rama Llama Llama,” (PG-13)
And the prize for most delightful crack pairing goes to this vid, and I won't ruin the surprise for you. :)
Festivids, “Silent Fandoms,” (G)
This one is unusual, original, fascinating. Not your standard vid, but a truly unique experiment, offering commentary on vidding and fandom.
Halloween Films, “White Telephone,” (M)
What makes this vid so amazing is the mash up of Jamie Lee Curtis in her original role, and the more recent reprise. As an exploration of trauma and the will to survive it's completely gripping. I really love this one.
Maleficent, “Shake It Off,” (PG-13)
I love this character study of Maleficent. It's gorgeous from start to finish and so cleverly constructed.
Ratatouille, “The Walker,” (G)
What's not to love about the story of a rat who just wants to cook? It's the brilliant song choice and sharp editing that makes this so good.
More recommendations behind the cut.
(Note for those playing the guess-the-vidder game: I may or may not have included vid(s) by me in the following recs. :)( more Festivids recsCollapse ) ETA
